Abstract

The present book aims to outline a possible interpretation of radical behaviorism as a theory of mind, which means, in other words, to contextualize it in the context of the discussions of the philosophy of mind. What exactly does this contextualization imply? There are possibly many differences between radical behaviorism and the theories that make up the philosophy of mind, including differences in agenda: the first emerges as a proposal for a philosophy of behavioral science, and the second was developed to address issues that have permeated philosophy since its emergence among the Greeks. The meaning of the present context, therefore, is simply to deal with some themes of the philosophy of mind from the radical behaviorist perspective, but always bearing in mind that this work will not exhaust all the problems and questions that form this subdivision of philosophy. The aim of this book is to contextualize radical behaviorism in the philosophy of mind through three activities. The first is to present a possible answer to the question "What is the mind?" . The second, in turn, demands the treatment of another question, namely, "What is the nature of the mind?" The first question underlies the problem of defining which things or phenomena are considered mental. It is, therefore, the search for a conceptual definition of the mind. The second question, on the other hand, addresses the ontology of the mental, that is, the characteristics essential to its existence. In turn, the third activity does not have a specific issue, but it is nevertheless important: it consists in the analysis of some theses, problems and questions presented by the theories of the mind through the radical behaviorist point of view. These activities are expected to represent at least one step towards the construction of a radical behaviorist theory of mind.

Abstract

Abstract

Although individuals may have different goals and wishes on the surface, deep down we all want the same things. Our fundamental needs are universal: Regardless of culture, age, and lifestyle, everyone ultimately has the same set of needs. Needs are the basic requirements for our functioning and the nutriments for our well-being and advancement. We can only fully develop and flourish if all our basic needs are satisfied (at least to some degree), and none can be neglected without significant negative consequences. Needs are also a strong direct source of meaning and pleasure (and displeasure): events and activities that fulfil our needs are both meaningful and pleasurable. Needs and design If one thing can be said about design, it is that its relevance to the individual and to humanity at large-its purpose, meaning, success or failure-depends on the extent to which it satisfies people's needs. Needs are the fundament of our motivation system, and all human activity is essentially fueled by the aspiration of need fulfilment. Products, systems, buildings, technology, and all other 'artificial' phenomena envisioned and built by people are essentially instruments for need satisfaction. 13 fundamental needs This booklet provides a typology of 13 fundamental psychological needs developed by Desmet and Fokkinga (2020). Each page shows a need and four corresponding sub-needs. These sub-needs illustrate the range and scope of the fundamental needs. Even though they are themselves not fundamental, they still represent relatively universal and general concepts. The (sub-) needs can, in turn, take shape as and through goals and desires that are specific to particular individuals and/or situations. You can use the overview as a source of design inspiration or, if you like, as a means to explore your personal happiness.

Abstract

The changing face of psychiatry and clinical psychology is mostly illustrated by the hugely increasing prevalence of autism spectrum syndrome. There has been a rapid advance in research, and books like this are therefore necessary. The book focuses on controversies in the diagnosis of autism with an examination of stercobilin, autism, and gastrointestinal disease. It also focuses on an exploration of scalp acupuncture as a possible treatment. There is also critical examination of autism in the classroom and an investigation into an unusual phenomenon seen in Africa called ?nodding syndrome.

Abstract

An accurate definition of memory would embarrass any serious scholar. Briefly, memory could be defined as a wonderful mechanism, a way to transport us back in time. Memory is therefore a mental activity that binds us over time, it is what gives meaning to the existence. Self-narration or autobiography means first of all asking oneself about the status of one's own identity, it means communication, communicating to ourselves and to others who we are; it means transforming the interior monologue into dialogue with otherness; it means marking and regulating our emotions through the representation of the events of our life.

Abstract

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed our lifestyle when, on 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Since then, many governments have introduced unprecedented containment measures, hoping to slow the spread of the virus. International research suggests that both the pandemic and the related protective measures, such as lockdown, curfews, and social distancing, are having a profound impact on the mental health of the population. Among the most commonly observed psychological effects, there are high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms, along with boredom and frustration. At the same time, the behavioral response of the population is of paramount importance to successfully contain the outbreak, creating a vicious circle in which the psychological distress impacts the willingness to comply with the protective measures, which, in turn, if prolonged, could exacerbate the population's distress. This book includes: i original studies on the worldwide psychological and behavioral impact of COVID-19 on targeted individuals (e.g., parents, social workers, patients affected by physical and mental disorders); ii studies exploring the effect of COVID-19 using advanced statistical and methodological techniques (e.g., machine learning technologies); iii research on practical applications that could help identify persons at risk, mitigate the negative effects of this situation, and offer insights to policymakers to manage the pandemic are also highly welcomed.

Abstract

In 2015, a new journal was launched: the Dutch Journal of Positive Psychology. The editor-in-chief invited me to contribute with a regular column that reflects on the question of how design can contribute to the field of positive psychology. I was immediately excited because I saw an opportunity to share some of our students' inspiring work with a wider audience. Hence, we agreed that the columns would serve to present examples of Positive Design - design cases that focus on human flourishing, by students and researchers of the TU Delft Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Over the years, I have witnessed how an increasing number of design students have become inspired by the concept of well-being. These are designers who aspire to consciously and deliberately use their design skills in contributing to the happiness of individuals and communities. Rather than being a fortuitous by-product of design, well-being has firmly anchored itself in the heart of these students' design intentions. I hope the columns convey some of their irrepressible enthusiasm. This is the second edition of the Positive Design booklet. It presents columns 11 to 19, written between 2018 and 2020. Some of the design cases focus on individuals, others on groups. Some help us to rediscover our talents, some support us in forming meaningful relationships, and others enable us to invest in our own happiness and that of those we care about.
